Will You ARISE & Help Me?
Dear Valued Subscriber,
It's hard to believe
it's almost Mother's Day. As I was a single parent for so many
years I normally receive a card for both Mother's, and, Father's
Day:-) I will be calling my mother this year as she
lives 3 hours from here but we were together a lot last weekend as I
explain below.
Only one thing beats
spending quality time with family and friends and that is,
spending quality time with family and friends on a gorgeous, sunny
weekend!
Jennifer and I
headed down the 401 late Friday afternoon with her 16 year-old
daughter, Ashton, and boyfriend, Dave along for the excursion. We
arrived at my eldest daughter Sara’s new home in Tecumseh to the
open arms of my energetic 5 and 6 year-old grandboys, Corbin and
Cameron. We chilled that evening because we had a busy day on
Saturday cleaning up the basement of my wonderful mother, Laura.
We’re talking over 50 years of accumulation here, and the overflow
possessions of my youngest sister, Dee, who lived with my mom up
until a few months ago.
I laughed to myself
when I saw the gigantic dumpster in the cobblestone driveway but
the last laugh was my sister Lisa’s, who ordered the metal
monster, when it was filled to the gills at days end. Several van
loads to a local charity thrift shop and loads of Dee’s stuff to
my storage garage as well. Did someone say stiff and sore on
Sunday morning?
It was a blend of
happy and sad reminiscing as we sorted through my late fathers
possessions (he passed on in 1996). Boxes of reel-to-reel tapes of
piano and organ performances from his music room, and, tapes he
made of bands he played in, choirs he conducted, concerts he
recorded from the radio etc. were among the treasured relics.
There was even a tape called “Rick Piano” that I can’t wait to
listen to. We gave away his large Teac 4-track tape recorder a
decade ago but he still had a small, broken down Roberts recorder
which accompanied us back home Sunday evening and which I will try
to coax to work over the weekend. Wish me luck!
On the Saturday
evening, Jenn, Sara, her friend Tanya and my niece went to a local
hot spot where I had invited my local business partners and some
friends and we had an absolute hoot! Sunday morning the
whole family met at a great breakfast joint for a scrumptious
brunch. Back over to my mom’s where we met with some of her neighbors
(I was raised in this house) and finally to Lisa’s hot tub before haulin’
it back up back the 401.
My great friend and
best-selling author, John Harricharan, is my guest on this weeks
10 Minute podcast,
and the
44 Minute Mentor Tuesday with Guy Finley debuted on
Tuesday so you just might want to tune into
Mentor Audio
and give them both a listen! I've chosen to feature, To Mother,
a poem that John wrote as a young man in honor of Mother's Day in
place of the feature article. I hope you enjoy it!
Lastly, here's
something you've probably seen before, but the words can never
ring truer:
M... is for
the million things she gave me,
O... means only that she's growing old,
T... is for the tears she shed to save me,
H... is for her heart of purest gold;
E... is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
R... means right, and right she'll always be.
Put them all together, they spell "MOTHER," A word that means the
world to me.
--Howard Johnson (c. 1915)

To Mother
Dedicated to All
Mothers Everywhere
a Poem by John Harricharan
Who thinks of us when the going gets
rough,
When the days are hard and the nights are tough?
Who feels it most when our hearts are broken
By the words of a friend, so thoughtlessly spoken?
Who could it be but Mother dear.
Who brought us up in the way we should go
And kept us well sheltered from sun and the snow?
Who would give up the most precious gift
To deliver us from evil, our souls to uplift?
Who could it be but Mother dear.
Whom should we thank along life's way,
While our journey progresses through night and day?
Whom should we love with each passing breath
From the dawn of our lives to the threshold of death?
Who should it be but Mother dear.

WHO CREATED EVIL?
The university professor challenged his students with this question:
"Did God create everything that exists?" A student bravely replied
"Yes, he did!" "God created everything?" the professor asked. "Yes
sir," the student replied.
The professor answered, "If God created everything, then God created
evil since evil exists, and according to the principle that our
works define who we are, then God is evil."
The professor was quite pleased with himself and boasted to the
students that he had proven once more that the Christian faith was a
myth. Another student raised his hand and said, "Can I ask you a
question, professor?"
"Of course," replied the professor.
The student stood up and asked, "Professor, does cold exist?"
The professor replied "Of course it exists. Have you never been
cold?"
The students snickered at the young man's question. The young man
replied, "In fact sir, cold does not exist. According to the laws of
physics, what we consider cold is in reality the absence of heat.
Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we
feel if we have no heat."
The student continued. "Professor, does darkness exist?"
The professor responded, "Of course it does."
The student replied, "Once again you are wrong sir. Darkness does
not exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light.
Light, we can study, but not darkness. You cannot measure darkness.
A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and
illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You
measure the amount of light present. Isn't this correct? Darkness is
a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light
present."
Finally the young man asked the professor. "Sir, does evil exist?"
Now uncertain, the professor responded, "Of course, as I have
already said. We see it every day. It is in the daily example of
man's inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and
violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing
else but evil."
To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist sir, or at least
it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It
is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to
describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is the
result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in
his heart. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat or
the darkness that comes when there is no light."
The professor sat down.

GIVING
BACK
You might already support these or similar organizations, but it's
the sad truth that we can never really do enough to help people,
especially children. Here is what I support and encourage you to
review:
The
Internet Toy Drive
Founded by Anne Marie Baugh and myself, and sponsored by Drew
Bledsoe (#11, 2001 Super Bowl Champion quarterback), we are official
corporate sponsors of the U.S. Marine's Toys for Tots program.
My
WorldVision Children
This is the special group of children from around the world that I
sponsor. WorldVision is a Christian organization that has been
around for decades and almost every penny donated goes directly to
these needy children and their families. Nothing beats receiving a
handwritten letter, or even an email now, from "your
child":-) You can even buy chickens or cows that get right to
these families in dire need!
St.
Jude Children's Hospital
My father was a lifelong musician and played piano in bands with
Danny Thomas (founder of St. Jude and father of Marlo Thomas) among
others during the depression, thirties and early World War II years.
Understandably, this world famous research hospital is close to my
heart:-)
Parenting
with Dignity P
If you are a parent, expecting to be one in the
future, or even believe you've done your parenting job, do yourself
a great favor and check out this fabulous resource! Drew Bledsoe,
his father and family members, my great friend Tom Heatherington and
many more have established an absolutely wonderful foundation
devoted to the betterment of children and families (Mac Bledsoe was
interviewed on ABC's 20/20 this year).
