Will You ARISE & Help Me?
Dear Valued Subscriber,
A belated Happy
Thanksgiving to all our Canadian subscribers. Hopefully, you
didn't overdue it with turkey, ham and all the trimmings like I
did! We celebrated at my sister's home in Hamilton and the
highlight seemed to be watching her wedding video where I was MC
and royally roasted her, her hubby and many others in attendance.
Geesh, put a microphone in front of that guy and . . . :-)
The world has once
again come together in the wake of yet another horrific natural
disaster. The earthquake in northern Pakistan has claimed nearly
40,000 lives and left tens of thousands homeless. As with the media
coverage with the latest hurricanes on the Gulf Coast the scenes
are simply too heart wrenching to watch. While this is unfolding
hundreds of thousands of families on our shores still need our
help. If you are a new subscriber please take a look at our
long-term relief project for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Here
is the link where every nickel of your donation will go
directly to victims:

I wrote in our last
issue about having my grandsons during the first week of October
while my eldest daughter vacationed in Mexico. It's pretty hard to
keep two energetic tykes entertained in a highrise but they were
very well behaved. We made sure to visit the sculpture park below
my building almost every evening after dinner so they could burn
off some pent-up steam. It's been a long time since I packed
lunches and helped with homework but we had a fun time. A one hour
round trip to school twice a day was not so fun though nor was the
last morning when one of my guys managed to sneak bubblegum into
bed the night before. It's been an equally long time since I had
to remove that sticky substance from a child's head! I wasn't
particularly thrilled when they arrived late for school but the
one teacher could not stop laughing as a frustrated me recounted
the tale and apologized for our tardiness. Her biggest chuckle was
seeing the red spot still atop Corbin's head as I just ran out of
time trying to get it all out. I received plenty of advice after
the fact though that peanut butter does a quick job of getting gum
out of hair.
Some more personal
news. I am moving in a few weeks. This time to the small city
about 200 miles from Windsor where Wayne Gretsky was born and
raised. A large sports center and expressway bear the name of the
world's greatest hockey player. Wayne's father, Walter, a
well-known celebrity himself, still resides in the family home (a
few blocks from where I will be living) and is very active in the
vibrant community of 87,000 raising money for charity. I will
certainly miss my Detroit skyline view but will be visiting
Windsor a few times a month to see my mom, my grandboys, my
sisters and my many friends.
Many of you will
know that I and few of my wonderful friends raise money each year
as corporate sponsors for the U.S. Marine's Toys for Tots
program with our annual
Internet
Toy Drive. We have enlisted the help of one of the
Internet's premier SEO companies and if you know even a little
about optimizing websites for the search engines you know that
having links pointing back to you is extremely important. So, I am
going to ask that if you have a website of any description and
want to help us put a smile on the face of a needy child this
Christmas that you
go grab a
banner and upload it and link to
http://www.internettoydrive.org. We will be updating them
shortly to reflect the "5th Annual..." but you can use what we
have right now. Also, we accept donations all year long and some
are coming in right now, so please do help if you can. Thank you!
I decided to feature
an article I wrote for my private site,
People Building
People, several months ago. We all get down and stressed
at times and I outline a process that I use to quickly bounce back
in Take a Timely Time Out. Perhaps it will work for you.
With the packing and just general confusion that goes along with
moving I have a feeling I will be taking some of my own medicine
very soon.
Assuming you enjoy
this publication can I ask you to do me a small, but at the same
time, huge favor?
Would you choose 3 people from your Address Book right now and
send them this issue or the main page link to ARISE!:
http://www.arise.themirrorezine.com - and suggest they
subscribe. Thank you, I'd really appreciate that!
Now, please kick back and enjoy this issue of ARISE!
As always, my
greatest wishes for your complete success,

ARISE ARTICLE
Take a
Timely Time Out
It's something I'd done over the years at times when I felt a little down or
stressed. Now it's something I do almost every day, sometimes several times a
day, so that I feel less stress and experience more joy in my life. For me, it's
really a magical, yet simple process. I'd like to share it with you.
I take a short time out to do what I call a Blessings Count. It's not a process
where I use a calculator or keep score or anything like that. Here's how it
works.
Usually early in the morning before I start working, I simply shut out all the
chatter in my mind and just focus on the fact that so much in my life is so
right. Just so many blessings. Despite the pressures and problems of everyday
life, it has always been this way. It will be no different for you. We all have
many blessings no matter where we are in our lives:-)
I may conjure up fond memories and images of my daughters, my grandchildren, my
mom, my late father, brother or sister, or some of my great friends. It may be
remembering a kindness that was extended to me or that I extended to someone.
Perhaps it is just the sunshine or much needed rain today.
They can be the shortest moments or the smallest things but whenever I reflect
upon these gifts I can't help but feel this deep sense of gratitude. And joy.
Suddenly and magically, I feel whatever unnecessary negative weight I was
carrying, lift. My problems seem to self-adjust and take on the proper
proportion. Any fear I may have been feeling is reduced, or disappears. The
balancing I receive from acknowledging the wonderful, positive and real
blessings in my life, and feeling truly grateful for them, is a very powerful
force indeed!
Something else. I have become more sensitive to the little everyday things that
are truly blessings in my life. It might be that little voice on the other end
of the phone saying "Papa, I love you". Do I ever feel blessed hearing that!
Could be the call from my mother who just wanted to say a very sincere thank you
for the tasty soup I made her. Even the fact that I enjoyed cutting up the fresh
vegetables to make a nutritious meal for her and then be able to deliver it and
have a nice visit is a great blessing.
A few days ago I received an email from someone who seemed to be at the end of
his rope trying to get a new business off the ground. He came across a piece I
wrote called "The Entrepreneur's Prayer" and he couldn't thank me enough for the
extra ounce of motivation he received from reading it. No greater blessing than
to be able to bless the lives of others. Truly.
"Let's choose today to quench our thirst for the 'good life' we think
others lead by acknowledging the good that already exists in our lives. We can
then offer the universe the gift of our grateful hearts."
Sarah Ban Breathnach
How about you? Is your list of blessings as long as mine? Take a time out and
try a Blessings Count. I guarantee you will discover a list just as long, and
hopefully longer:-)
Here's how else a Blessings Count can improve your life. We are continually
bombarded by negativity in our lives. Our minds are conditioned by our
environment to run like the evening news - The Channel 7 Action Bad News, that
is! Negative thought after negative thought streams endlessly on the screens of
our minds like the news anchor reeling off stories of suffering, destruction and
death. A good friend of mine suggested years ago that some media mogul should
create GNN - the Good News Network. You know, feature only stories about the
abundant, very good news in this world we never get to hear about. Great idea,
except that because of our conditioning it would never find a large enough
audience to make it viable. Sad, but another story altogether.
Thing is though, with life being as complicated and confusing as it is today, we
need to be running as many good-news scripts through our minds as often as we
can each day. One great way to accomplish this is to take that time out and do
your Blessings Count. You see, it will be all good news because you have so many
blessings to choose from!
Last week, at the apex of a short period of time where I had become very
stressed over business issues (and should have been practicing what I am
preaching) I received a call from a close friend of mine. He was on the road in
his large motor coach and just pulling into this busy drive-thru coffee place.
Problem was, he turned into the one-way lane the wrong way!
The sound of angry horns and loud voices were soon heard and this seemed to be
perfect background ambience for the loud stress I was allowing myself to feel.
What happened next though was amazing. One by one my unfrazzled friend, who was
literally plugging up the entire joint with his mammoth vehicle and couldn't
maneuver out of the situation, addressed each screaming person very calmly in
his low-key voice, even using some pretty hilarious self-deprecating humor in
the process. No one could have possibly remained angry at this guy! Soon the
horn blasts silenced and the verbal exchanges turned friendly. I even heard a
few of the formerly angry motorists laugh! He got them all to back up and get
out of his way and most importantly, if he didn't teach them a great life
lesson, he certainly helped to make a great day for them. I could only feel a
little ashamed that I wasn't handling my pressure at the time with such great
grace. Being made privy to this great moment was, well, a blessing!
Nothing seems to rattle my friend. I've never seen him angry or appear to be
overtly stressed. At times I have been tempted to label him as irresponsible but
I think just a layer deeper and realize that he is indeed very wise to have
learned to do whatever version of a Blessings Count that he does - all day long.
For him, life is simply great - all the time. Incidentally, he makes his living
helping people to lead healthier and happier lives and he has blessed many.
Someone who walks his talk and most certainly counts his blessings!
As the timing of the Universe often has it, someone passed along this quote by
Henry Ward Beecher just as I was putting the finishing touches on this article:
"Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature
into his pictures."
What a wonderful way to end this article. I mean, if we can learn to balance
ourselves and feel less stress and experience more joy in our daily lives so
that we can in fact paint a spectacular portrait of our own life, why not find a
simple way to create that masterpiece?
Life itself is a blessing. How we live it and recognize all the blessings we
truly have can make it all the more so.
Take a timely time out and Count Your Blessings!

Can

710
A few days ago I was having some work done at the local Ford
Dealership. A blonde came in and asked for a seven-hundred-ten.
We all looked at each other and another customer asked, "What is a
seven-hundred-ten?"
She replied, "You know, the little piece in the middle of the
engine, I have lost it and need a new one." She said that she did
not know what it was but this piece had always been there.
He gave her a piece of paper and a pen and asked her to draw what
the piece looked like. She drew a circle and in the middle of it
wrote 710. He then took her over to another car, which had its hood
up and asked, "Is there a 710 on this car?"
She pointed and said, "Of course, it's right "there."

The Rose
by Jim Rohn
Lifestyle is style over
amount. And style is an art - the art of living. You can't buy style
with money. You can't buy good taste with money. You can only buy
more with money. Lifestyle is culture - the appreciation of good
music, dance, art, sculpture, literature, plays and the art of
living well. It's a taste for the fine, the unique, the beautiful.
Lifestyle also means rewarding excellence wherever you find it by
not taking the small things of life for granted. With Valentine's
Day approaching I wanted to illustrate this with a personal
anecdote:
Many years ago my lady friend and I were on a trip to Carmel,
California for some shopping and exploring. On the way we stopped at
a service station. As soon as we parked our car in front of the
pumps, a young man, about eighteen or nineteen, came bouncing out to
the car and with a big smile said, "Can I help you?"
"Yes," I answered. "A full tank of gas, please." I wasn't prepared
for what followed. In this day and age of self-service and
deteriorating customer treatment, this young man checked every tire,
washed every window - even the sunroof - singing and whistling the
whole time. We couldn't believe both the quality of service and his
upbeat attitude about his work.
When he brought the bill I said to the young man, "Hey, you really
have taken good care of us. I appreciate it."
He replied, "I really enjoy working. It's fun for me and I get to
meet nice people like you."
This kid was really something!
I said, "We're on our way to Carmel and we want to get some
milkshakes. Can you tell us where we can find the nearest
Baskin-Robbins?"
"Baskin-Robbins is just a few blocks away," he said as he gave us
exact directions. Then he added, "Don't park out front - park around
to the side so your car won't get sideswiped."
What a kid!
As we got to the ice cream store we ordered milkshakes, except that
instead of two, we ordered three. Then we drove back to the station.
Our young friend dashed out to greet us. "Hey, I see you got your
milkshakes."
"Yes, and this one is for you!"
His mouth fell open. "For me?"
"Sure. With all the fantastic service you gave us, I couldn't leave
you out of the milkshake deal."
"Wow!" was his astonished reply.
As we drove off I could see him in my rear-view mirror just standing
there, grinning from ear to ear.
Now, what did this little act of generosity cost me? Only about two
dollars - you see, it's not the money, it's the style.
Well, I must have been feeling especially creative that day, so on
our arrival in Carmel I drove directly to a flower shop. As we
walked inside I said to the florist, "I need a long-stemmed rose for
my lady to carry while we go shopping in Carmel."
The florist, a rather unromantic type, replied, "We sell them by the
dozen."
"I don't need a dozen," I said, "just one."
"Well," he replied haughtily, "it will cost you two dollars."
"Wonderful," I exclaimed. "There's nothing worse than a cheap rose."
Selecting the rose with some deliberation, I handed it to my friend.
She was so impressed! And the cost? Two dollars. Just two dollars. A
bit later she looked up and said, "Jim, I must be the only woman in
Carmel today carrying a rose." And I believe she probably was.
Can you imagine the opportunity to create magic with those around
you, and all for the cost of a few dollars, some imagination and
care. Remember, it is not the amount that matters but the thought
and care that often has the greatest impact upon those you love.

GIVING
BACK
You might already support these or similar organizations, but it's
the sad truth that we can never really do enough to help people,
especially children. Here is what I support and encourage you to
review:
The
Internet Toy Drive
Founded by Anne Marie Baugh and myself, and sponsored by Drew
Bledsoe (#11, 2001 Super Bowl Champion quarterback), we are official
corporate sponsors of the U.S. Marine's Toys for Tots program.
My
WorldVision Children
This is the special group of children from around the world that I
sponsor. WorldVision is a Christian organization that has been
around for decades and almost every penny donated goes directly to
these needy children and their families. Nothing beats receiving a
handwritten letter, or even an email now, from "your
child":-) You can even buy chickens or cows that get right to
these families in dire need!
St.
Jude Children's Hospital
My father was a lifelong musician and played piano in bands with
Danny Thomas (founder of St. Jude and father of Marlo Thomas) among
others during the depression, thirties and early World War II years.
Understandably, this world famous research hospital is close to my
heart:-)
Parenting
with Dignity P
If you are a parent, expecting to be one in the
future, or even believe you've done your parenting job, do yourself
a great favor and check out this fabulous resource! Drew Bledsoe,
his father and family members, my great friend Tom Heatherington and
many more have established an absolutely wonderful foundation
devoted to the betterment of children and families (Mac Bledsoe was
interviewed on ABC's 20/20 this year).
