Will You ARISE & Help Me?
Dear Valued Subscriber,
Last week, the world
was rocked by the cruel, senseless
slaughter of so many innocent people in London, England. A few
hours after the terrorist attack, and still to this moment,
dozens of Coast Guard and Police boats stand vigil and intercept
boat traffic in the
waters in front of the skyscrapers of downtown Detroit. Above,
Army and Coast Guard choppers parade back and forth, non-stop.
Occasionally, F-16 Tomcats from nearby Selfridge Air Force Base
soar straight down the international border in the middle of the
Detroit River. Seems surreal. Hovering above it all in time for this week's Major
League Baseball All-Star Game at the new Comerica Park, the
impressive red, white and blue AmeriQuest blimp. All of this
activity, as well as one of the ultimate symbols of freedom and
capitalism,
the world headquarters of General Motors and it's magnificent
cylindrical towers, are in plain view of my living room. Although I try hard to never "go
there", I can't help but occasionally wonder whether I will
someday personally witness another September, 11, 2001.
Unfortunately, sad signs of the times.
I have been spending
a few mornings each week working in the beautiful and
ever-blossoming
rock garden
beneath my building. I told the story in my book,
A Large Slice
of Life to Go, Please!, of this vacant, muddy lot where a crew of
volunteers turned an eyesore into a thing of real beauty. Now, I
am one of them, hauling and stacking rock, spreading bark along
the stepped paths, pulling weeds and planting carefully selected
shrubbery on the land atop the underground train tunnel that
straddles Canada and the United States (another heavily guarded
access point). My friend, Jack Renner (you can see the entire history of this
project if you
click
this link), a well-known local realtor, has
done a magnificent job rallying the support of our city government,
the railway, local businesses and the community to create a placid and peaceful
place for people to enjoy. A few of my local business friends
share the grunt work and the feeling of accomplishment, and
work-out we get, is wonderful!
A month ago, I
was re-united with my youngest daughter, Teri. She lives in
Belleville, Ontario, and we met halfway at my sisters home in
Hamilton to attend the senior kindergarten graduation of her
youngest, Colin. Many people believe we go overboard and start too early
with these kinds of things but this very old-school and nurturing
daycare, operated by nuns, does a wonderful job of building
self-esteem in their students. And we all know we can never do
enough of that! The graduation ceremony was touching and funny in
spots (I was the videographer) and this ended up a mini family
reunion. I really enjoyed having Teri and her fiance´, Kyle, around for a couple of days.
Incidentally, my masterful touch on the BBQ was appreciated by the
large crew:-) Two weekends ago, my niece and her daughter flew in from
Kansas and we got to do it all over again!

Linda Aspen Baxter and I have been

deadline for "The
Ultimate Teenager's Survival Guide" until September 30th, 2005. Inquiries and
submissions (some great stories received and being developed with
the authors) are
growing but we still need more, so please,

you know of a school or a teacher or a community group/leader that is centered
around teenagers, I strongly encourage you to visit our site, and contact those persons to
help spread the word.
Please
send those people here. Thank you!

Personal
Development Secrets- Ever Been in a Hole in Life?
by Doug Firebaugh
Ever been in a hole in Life? You look around, and
suddenly you realize that everything is closed in, and you have dug yourself and
your life in a hole!
How?
With your negative words, thinking, opinions, beliefs, doubts and when they
really were uncalled for and you couldn't see what was REALLY going on?
For instance:
"I think there is a world market for about 5 computers..." Thomas J. Watson/IBM
Yeah Tom, sure.
"I don't need Bodyguards..." Jimmy Hoffa/two weeks before his disappearance.
Jimmy...where are you?
"I don't think that sound will sell. Guitars are on the way out..." DECCA
Records, about a new group called The Beatles.
She loves you, yeah! yeah! yeah!!!!!!
SEE what I mean? Some people's thinking is totally birthed from a RUT.
Let me ask you this: Do you have erroneous opinions about things, hopes, and
about your abilities?
Have you dug yourself into a hole, and now it has turned into a very narrow rut?
Wanna know a Secret? That Hole, or rut, will soon become a Grave -- where you
have dug yourself in.
Why does that happen??? Simple. You are not seeing the right "hole." People dig
themselves into a hole because they are not focused on the WHOLE of a situation,
the COMPLETE picture, the full story and the REAL, TOTAL YOU!
The wholeness of the Real You is staggering. The Greatness inside of you is
amazing if you quit digging your Hole long enough to see the "Whole" picture of
who you REALLY are! You are complete and a GREAT package for Success, but you
MUST quit your negative "digging" and start climbing the Ladder of Greatness!
And if you start climbing the Ladder of Greatness, your digging will
automatically stop. You will be looking at you, through different eyes. You see
the WHOLE picture, not a Hole IN the picture, as most do, and continue to see
and believe about themselves their whole lives.
The Beatles did not give up. They saw the Whole Picture. Steve Jobs did not give
up. He saw the Whole Picture! What if Thomas Watson were alive today. Think he'd
be shocked?
If you find yourself in a Hole and no way out heading into the rest of the year,
don't despair. Focus your eyes on the Whole Picture, The Complete Picture, and
Total Potential of YOU! Quit digging any further, set your shovel of negative
thoughts down, and see what you need to do to start climbing out, with the Whole
Vision of Who you are in front of you!
Debt? Put a plan together to pay it off. It will require sacrifice and
discipline.
Relationship? It's your time to see the whole picture of the relationship and
what you need to do to fix it, or jettison it.
Self Doubt? Quit digging that hole and get the book "As a Man Thinketh" by James
Allen - written in 1892. It will change your life like it did mine. See the
Whole of the situation, not what you just can see at that moment.
There is greatness inside of you buried in some hole that you dug in your heart.
"Singer? You gotta be kidding. You should go back and finish up the farm work
you left. That was the worst singing I ever heard." That came from a Liberty
Records Producer stuck on a hole.
He was talking about a new group called the Mudcats...Who was the Lead Singer?
Elvis Presley. Look at the size of THAT HOLE!
Focus on the Whole, and the holes will get shallower till there are no more...
and you will be on a solid path to Success!
Blessings!

Can
I Get ARISE Outa You?
Winter Forecast
It was October and the Indians on a remote reservation asked their
new Chief if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild.
Since he was a Chief in a modern society he had never been taught
the old secrets.
When he looked at the sky he couldn't tell what the winter was going
to be like.
Nevertheless, to be on the safe side he told his tribe that the
winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the
village should collect firewood to be prepared.
But being a practical leader, after several days he got an idea. He
went to the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and
asked, "Is the coming winter going to be cold?"
"It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold," the
meteorologist at the weather service responded.
So the Chief went back to his people and told them to collect even
more firewood in order to be prepared.
A week later he called the National Weather Service again. "Does it
still look like it is going to be a very cold winter?"
"Yes," the man at National Weather Service again replied, "it's
going to be a very cold winter."
The Chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect
every scrap of firewood they could find.
Two weeks later the Chief called the National Weather Service again.
"Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?"
"Absolutely," the man replied. "It's looking more and more like it
is going to be one of the coldest winters ever."
"How can you be so sure?" the Chief asked.
The weatherman replied, "The Indians are collecting firewood like
crazy."

TROUBLE BOX
by Steve Goodier
They call it a "trouble
box." It is a brightly colored, egg-sized box found among natives of
Guatemala. Inside are placed six tiny dolls. Families often keep one
inside their homes. When trouble befalls a family member, the
disturbed person takes out one of the tiny dolls and talks the
problem over with it. Then the doll is set aside and the problem
forgotten.
If another difficulty comes up that same day, another doll is
selected to "listen." Each doll is then set aside to mull over the
situation. Finally, at the end of every day, the dolls are gathered
and replaced in the box, ready for tomorrow.
The idea sounds intriguing! One doll for one problem. And it makes
psychological sense. Many of our troubles cannot be acted upon
immediately and just become a source of destructive worry. But if we
can sufficiently talk through a problem and then, if no action is
required, set it aside, we can go about the business of living
unencumbered.
The formula is simple: a) talk through the problem, either with a
caring friend or by yourself; b) if it requires action, do what must
be done; and c) if no action is called for, then set it aside and
focus your energies in more productive areas. Talk. Act. Move on.
Remember, worry is not the same as healthy concern. Worry is like a
rocking chair -- it gives you something to do, but gets you nowhere.
Decide to worry less, and you may find yourself living more!

GIVING
BACK
You might already support these or similar organizations, but it's
the sad truth that we can never really do enough to help people,
especially children. Here is what I support and encourage you to
review:
The
Internet Toy Drive
Founded by Anne Marie Baugh and myself, and sponsored by Drew
Bledsoe (#11, 2001 Super Bowl Champion quarterback), we are official
corporate sponsors of the U.S. Marine's Toys for Tots program.
My
WorldVision Children
This is the special group of children from around the world that I
sponsor. WorldVision is a Christian organization that has been
around for decades and almost every penny donated goes directly to
these needy children and their families. Nothing beats receiving a
handwritten letter, or even an email now, from "your
child":-) You can even buy chickens or cows that get right to
these families in dire need!
St.
Jude Children's Hospital
My father was a lifelong musician and played piano in bands with
Danny Thomas (founder of St. Jude and father of Marlo Thomas) among
others during the depression, thirties and early World War II years.
Understandably, this world famous research hospital is close to my
heart:-)
Parenting
with Dignity P
If you are a parent, expecting to be one in the
future, or even believe you've done your parenting job, do yourself
a great favor and check out this fabulous resource! Drew Bledsoe,
his father and family members, my great friend Tom Heatherington and
many more have established an absolutely wonderful foundation
devoted to the betterment of children and families (Mac Bledsoe was
interviewed on ABC's 20/20 this year).
