Will You ARISE & Help Me?

Dear Valued Subscriber,

I have decided to cut back on my normal long-winded introduction in each issue to get you more quickly to the good stuff. I'm sure I won't receive many complaints:-)

You'll be receiving a special email from me on May 11. As you know, I don't send many promotions at all, but this one promises to be something I know you will really appreciate. Also, I have a brand new product coming out in a few weeks and I will keep you apprised of that.

I am happy to report that Jacob is doing just fine in his cage all by his perty self re: last issue. My fine-feathered friend continues to sing more loudly and longer than ever before (can be challenging at times when attempting to conduct business on the phone in my office, where he resides)  and seems to have adjusted well to losing his roommate of 4 years. I think I will keep him a happy, single male for the time being:-)

A long-time friend of mine from Windsor who got married and moved to Oregon is looking for work as a virtual assistant. She has worked in various office settings for many years and has many in-demand office skills. If you or anyone you know requires a dedicated and qualified multitasking assistant, please drop me an email and I'll send on her resume. She comes with my highest recommendation.

Linda Aspen Baxter and I have been equally busy this past year and we decided to extend the submission deadline for "The Ultimate Teenager's Survival Guide" until June 30th, 2005. Inquiries and submissions (some great stories received and being developed with the authors) are growing but we still need more, so please, if you know of a school or a teacher or a community group/leader  that is centered around teenagers, I strongly encourage you to visit our site, and contact those persons to help spread the word. Please send those people here. Thank you!

The featured article was written by first time contributor, Wendy Betterini. I ran across this piece in a directory and read several more excellent articles by this gifted writer, and, New Age music artist. Do check out her website at the end of  "New Beginnings." I'm sure this won't be the last you hear from Wendy within these pages. Welcome to ARISE! Wendy!

Now, please kick back (and if you can't right now, just click on the Print This Page icon at the top, scoop the pages from your printer and take it to bed with you:-) and enjoy this issue of ARISE!

As always, my greatest wishes for your complete success,

Rick Beneteau

New Beginnings
by Wendy Betterini

I recently had the pleasure of seeing the movie, 50 First Dates starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore.

The main character, "Lucy" (Barrymore) has virtually no short-term memory due to a car accident. She remembers everything up until the point of the accident, but retains no new memories of anything that has happened since. When she goes to sleep at night, she forgets everything that happened that day, and awakens thinking it's the day before the accident happened.

I'm sure you can imagine the challenges of such a condition! Anyone she meets, she forgets. Holding a job is nearly impossible since she can't remember the previous day's events. Relationships present another challenge. When Henry (Sandler) meets Lucy, there is instant attraction between them, but each day she forgets she met him the day before. It seems impossible to have a long-term relationship with Lucy, since she can't even remember him! Finally, Henry gets the bright idea to make a video for her, which details her life since the accident and her budding romance with him. Lucy also begins to keep a written journal, so she can skim through the previous entries and read about her life from her own perspective.

Though the situation is difficult to say the least, this movie contains a beautiful metaphor for new beginnings. How much baggage do we bring to each new day in our own lives? How many grudges do we hold? How many disappointments do we cling to, and let them color today?

Though we can't fully forget like Lucy, we can certainly make a decision to wipe the slate clean each morning and start over again! It is often our own refusal to let go and move on that causes the most pain. Each day can be a new beginning if we choose to make it so. Each night before bed we can choose what we want to keep and what we want to release. We can become someone new, purely by the power of our thoughts and intentions. The toughest part is deciding exactly who we want to become, and having the courage to see it through!

I am currently doing this in my own life. I'm pulling out the old, dust-caked parts of myself that I deemed unacceptable years ago, and giving them another look. And I'm discovering they aren't so bad ;-)

What about you? Are you ready for a new beginning? Are you afraid of starting over? There really isn't anything to fear but fear itself. Once you actually begin the process, it becomes wildly exciting!

Maybe you're happy with yourself already. If so, that's wonderful! No need to fix it if it ain't broken. But if you're living in a vacuum of dissatisfaction and boredom, it might be time to write the next chapter of your life. Or even a whole new book. You are the author. What do you want the storyline of your life to say?

Can I Get ARISE Outa You?

You Know You're Growing Old When ...

You've come to the annoying realization that your parents were right about almost everything.

The bag boy volunteers to help load groceries into your car in the "ten items or less" lane.

You've stopped supporting your children, and started supporting your parents.

You've found yourself discussing the weather.

You remember your kids' names, just not always the right one.

You have nightmares about forgetting to move the garbage cans to the street for the garbage collector.

Your high school yearbook is now home to three different species of mold.

You buy "age-defying" makeup and "anti-wrinkle" creams and believe they work.

You've realized that all those geeky people in Bermuda shorts walking around Disney World include you.

You recognize Led Zeppelin songs that have been turned into elevator Muzak.

You've had three opportunities to buy every single Disney Animated Classic - "for the last time in a generation!"

Wal-Mart and Target seem to share your fashion sense.

The only way you know to stop a virtual pet from beeping involves the patio and a sledgehammer.

You can pack two suits, Five shirts, five ties, five pairs of underwear, five pairs of socks, a pair of shoes, and half of your bathroom into a carry-on bag-in less than five minutes.

You know what Earth Shoes are.

You think if you hear "Stairway to Heaven" one more time your head will explode.

Your weight-lifting program seems to have no effect on your muscles, but the veins on the backs of your hands are bulking up quite nicely.

IN THE CEMENT MIXER
by Steve Goodier

Did you ever have a day like this? A man, cleaning one of those big cement trucks, got caught in the mixer. He climbed into the mixer with a hose to flush out the remaining cement when his hose caught on a lever and pulled it to the "on" position. Suddenly, he found himself going round and round in the mixer with no way to escape! Slipping,
sliding and banging around inside, all he could do was shout for help.

Fortunately, another worker came over and shut it off. In moments, a bruised and battered man, covered with wet concrete, emerged from the mixer. It reminds me of some days I've had..

Of course, no one ever said life is easy! But, as that incredible humanitarian novelist, Harriet Beecher Stowe, said, "When you get in a tight place and everything goes against you, until it seems as if you could not hold on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time when the tide will turn."

If it feels as if you are in the cement mixer, do you need to hold on a little longer?

GIVING BACK

You might already support these or similar organizations, but it's the sad truth that we can never really do enough to help people, especially children. Here is what I support and encourage you to review:

The Internet Toy Drive
Founded by Anne Marie Baugh and myself, and sponsored by Drew Bledsoe (#11, 2001 Super Bowl Champion quarterback), we are official corporate sponsors of the U.S. Marine's Toys for Tots program.

My WorldVision Children
This is the special group of children from around the world that I sponsor. WorldVision is a Christian organization that has been around for decades and almost every penny donated goes directly to these needy children and their families. Nothing beats receiving a handwritten letter, or even an email now, from "your child":-) You can even buy chickens or cows that get right to these families in dire need!

St. Jude Children's Hospital
My father was a lifelong musician and played piano in bands with Danny Thomas (founder of St. Jude and father of Marlo Thomas) among others during the depression, thirties and early World War II years. Understandably, this world famous research hospital is close to my heart:-)

Parenting with Dignity P
If you are a parent, expecting to be one in the future, or even believe you've done your parenting job, do yourself a great favor and check out this fabulous resource! Drew Bledsoe, his father and family members, my great friend Tom Heatherington and many more have established an absolutely wonderful foundation devoted to the betterment of children and families (Mac Bledsoe was interviewed on ABC's 20/20 this year).
