Will You ARISE & Help Me?

Dear Valued Subscriber,

As I write this I am watching the parade of small planes fly circles around downtown Detroit towing along their bright flashy advertising banners.  It's a bright, beautiful and crisp day here - perfect weather for Opening Day for the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Field.
A true sign of spring!

We lost a man of peace. Pope John Paul II stood more than anything for elevating basic human dignity. Known mostly for helping to free his native country of Poland from the grip of it's harsh Communist government, he was a true man of the people. Although many did not agree with his reluctance to modernize church doctrine, he had the respect of millions and millions around the world. I, for one, believe Karol Jozef Wojtyla will go down in history as not only one of the greatest popes, but also as one the most influential and beloved leaders the world will ever know.

I had the honor of being asked to contribute an interview to a print book by Canadian copywriter, Troy D. White. It's called "Entrepreneurial Spirits" and features wonderful interviews with notable entrepreneurs John Assaraf, Ted Nicholas, Joe Sugarman, John Harricharan and dozens of others. Many of the interviews are amazing. Feel free to check out Troy's website (I'm not an affiliate).

Linda Caroll, my good friend and publisher of my first print book, and I,  are finally (my fault, not hers) making plans to promote "A Large Slice of Life to Go, Please!". It was never for lack of wanting to on my part for the past year. Just a matter of life and business getting in the way. But she cornered me last month and we are now making some very solid plans including having a "Meet the Author" event at the Tiki Books booth at the Canadian Book Expo in Toronto in June. If you live near or are going to be in Toronto on the 25th or 26th of June, I'd love to meet you!

Linda Aspen Baxter and I have been equally busy this past year and we decided to extend the submission deadline for "The Ultimate Teenager's Survival Guide" until April 30, 2005. Inquiries and submissions (some great stories received and being developed with the authors) are growing but we still need more, so please, if you know of a school or a teacher or a community group/leader  that is centered around teenagers, I strongly encourage you to visit our site, and contact those persons to help spread the word. Please send those people here. Thank you!

I seldom share material between ARISE! and my membership-based publication, People Building People,  (except perhaps some current information from my opening as is the case this issue with my small tribute to Pope John Paul II and info about the Toronto book show) and rarely do I share articles. This issue though, I am sharing the Bonus Article from PBP as it is an exceptionally well-written and wonderful piece about relationships from Dennis Gaskill that I really want you to read.

Now, please kick back (and if you can't right now, just click on the Print This Page icon at the top, scoop the pages from your printer and take it to bed with you:-) and enjoy this issue of ARISE!

As always, my greatest wishes for your complete success,

Rick Beneteau

YOUR ARISE ARTICLE

I'm Not Concerned
by Dennis Gaskill

I'm not concerned with what you look like.

I want to know how you look at life, and if you look for the good in people. How do you want other people to see you? What do you see that you can do so that others may see you as you wish they would? These are your "looks" that I care most about.

I'm not concerned with how much money you have.

I want to know if you are rich in less material matters, for that speaks of your character. Do you see the beauty in each day? Do you treasure your friendships and family? Are you thankful for what you have? Or do you ignore the beauty around you and take life and people for granted because that requires less thought and effort?

I'm not concerned with your age.

I want to know if you are growing and evolving as a human being. I want to know if you're mature enough to own your responsibilities, and young enough in thought to still have dreams and goals, no matter how big or small they may be.

I'm not concerned with what your career might be.

I want to know what you dream about in your highest aspirations for yourself. I want to know if you are working to reach those heights, or if are you are just waiting for them to happen.

I'm not concerned with who your friends are.

I want to know if you can give them their day in the sun and help them celebrate their triumphs, or if you must always one-up them or otherwise steal their thunder and grab the spotlight. I'm not concerned with who your friends are, I want to know what kind of friend you are to them.

I'm not concerned with your shortcomings.

I want to know if you try and you fail, whether you know that failing at any THING doesn't make YOU a failure. I want to know if you fail time and time again, can you still look at a sunset and realize the beauty of it, or see the innocence and trust in the eyes of a child, or be grateful that each day is a new beginning? I want to know if you fail today, will you begin anew tomorrow with as much faith, resolve, and passion
as the day before?

I'm not concerned with your past.

All your yesterdays are lessons for today's living. I want to know if you can you let go of what isn't working for you in life and build on what is working. Each day is an opportunity to become who you truly are. Your greatest challenge, everyone's single greatest challenge in life, is to discover who you would be in your highest vision of yourself, and then
to become that person. Do you dare, or don't you care?

I'm not concerned with who you romanticize yourself to be.

I want to know of your true character. I want to know if, as a friend, would you have the courage to stand next to me in the eye of a storm in a sea of trouble, or would you jump ship and seek safe harbor, forsaking our friendship for your convenience and ease?

I'm not concerned with your religion.

I want to know if you are awed when you look into the night sky and witness the vastness and majesty of the Universe. I want to know if you live by the Golden Rule. I want to know if you know that YOU ARE A MIRACLE, completely unique in all of Creation, and an equal with all others.

I'm not concerned with how comfortably you live.

I want to know how comfortable you make others feel - with you, and about themselves. Do you know that those who like you are those who feel comfortable with themselves when they're with you? I want to know if you are giving and forgiving, or if you're always keeping score and pointing out faults. I want to know if you are comfortable with your own soul, even as you are still discovering the depth, wisdom, and glory of it.

Socrates was once asked why the brilliant Alcibiades was always so unhappy. Socrates answered, "Because wherever he goes, Alcibiades takes himself with him." Alcibiades was not comfortable with himself, so he was rarely happy. As brilliant as he may have been, he didn't understand that...

...you create yourself each day. Life is constant change. Each day you can try to re-create who you were, or you can flow with the energy of life and willfully create an ever-expanding, ever-higher version of yourself.

Live with purpose and intent. Create a living masterpiece. After all, it's your LIFE. Take charge of it!

Poignant Ponderings

A WONDROUS MYSTERY

Sometimes fact is more mysterious than fiction! The "Denver Post" printed an article December 23, 1981 about a stranger-than-fact event that occurred in Colorado.

Stan Sieczkowski heard in church about a Denver family facing a rather bleak Christmas holiday. Medical bills robbed them of any extras; they would not even have a tree.

So Stan and his son Jay determined to get them that tree. They headed up into the Colorado Rockies in the family pickup. However, the truck skidded off the icy road and hit a boulder that shattered the windshield. Jay was showered by glass slivers and suffered from shock and crash trauma. Stan was uninjured, though somewhat shaken.

Cars sped past that day -- maybe 200 of them. Only two stopped. A gentle, dark-haired woman took the boy into her car to comfort him while her husband and another man helped Stan move his truck off the road. Then they drove father and son to Stan's home and quietly left without identifying themselves.

Later that month, Stan's pastor asked if he might deliver a food basket to the unfortunate family for which he had earlier tried to cut a tree. Stan found the house, but he could hardly find his speech when the door opened. Standing there before him was the same couple who had helped him on the mountain road!

Call it an amazing coincidence...or call it divine providence. Some mysteries are better left unanalyzed. But it is nice to remember that, when we give our hearts away in a spirit of generosity, we can still brush up against wonder, joy and love.

GIVING BACK

You might already support these or similar organizations, but it's the sad truth that we can never really do enough to help people, especially children. Here is what I support and encourage you to review:

The Internet Toy Drive
Founded by Anne Marie Baugh and myself, and sponsored by Drew Bledsoe (#11, 2001 Super Bowl Champion quarterback), we are official corporate sponsors of the U.S. Marine's Toys for Tots program.

My WorldVision Children
This is the special group of children from around the world that I sponsor. WorldVision is a Christian organization that has been around for decades and almost every penny donated goes directly to these needy children and their families. Nothing beats receiving a handwritten letter, or even an email now, from "your child":-) You can even buy chickens or cows that get right to these families in dire need!

St. Jude Children's Hospital
My father was a lifelong musician and played piano in bands with Danny Thomas (founder of St. Jude and father of Marlo Thomas) among others during the depression, thirties and early World War II years. Understandably, this world famous research hospital is close to my heart:-)

Parenting with Dignity P
If you are a parent, expecting to be one in the future, or even believe you've done your parenting job, do yourself a great favor and check out this fabulous resource! Drew Bledsoe, his father and family members, my great friend Tom Heatherington and many more have established an absolutely wonderful foundation devoted to the betterment of children and families (Mac Bledsoe was interviewed on ABC's 20/20 this year).
