Will You ARISE & Help Me?
Dear Valued Subscriber,
I can hardly believe
it's December with Christmas and the New Year fast approaching. Are
you too asking yourself where the heck this year went?
My five-year old grandson,
whose birthday falls a week before Christmas, has been for the past few
weeks, with fervor, providing me with his laundry list of toys
he "expects" to receive on both occasions. This basically amounts
to every robot, remote-controlled racer and action figure he sees in
his cartoon commercials. I returned a few hours ago from a
shopping spree, and simply because Corbin truly expects to receive
the toys he wants, he will now receive many of them. May I ask, why
don't we, as enlightened adults, expect to receive, and get, more of
the great things in life that we desire, and truly deserve?
If you are a new
subscriber I invite you to check out my
Annual
Internet Toy Drive. My co-founders, jl scott and Anne Marie
Baugh, and 4th year sponsor, Drew Bledsoe (QB of the Buffalo Bills),
have poured a lotta heart, sweat and tears into
the building of ITD and we plan to raise $100,000.00 for the
official U.S. Marines Toys for Tots program this year. Do you
want to be part of an Internet volunteer movement that will
help put a smile of the face of thousands of children this year?
to discover how easy it is to help publicize the Internet Toy Drive
and put at least one gift under the
Christmas tree for a child who otherwise would not receive one.
Thank you:-)
I was blessed to have been offered to
do two toy drive interviews with two very special people, Michael Lamb of
the Moneyroom,
and Tony Marino of
AmericaWebWorks. You can listen to Mike's interview on
the main
page of ITD, and Tony's (a little bit o' biz in this one) on
the left side
of his website.
I will
keep mentioning "The
Ultimate Teenager's Survival Guide" until we have reached
our goal of having received enough powerful and empowering stories
from teens, to help teens, in order to put our book together. Inquiries and
submissions (some great stories received and being developed with
the authors) are
growing, so, please,
if
you know of a school, or a teacher, or a community group/leader that is centered
around teenagers, I strongly encourage you to visit our site, and immediately contact those persons to
help spread the word.
Please
send those people here. Thank you!
Your
ARISE Article is about one of , if not the, single thing can
bring us happiness - Freedom. It's from the pen of one of my
favorite writers, personal coach Drew Rozell.
Now, please kick back
(and if you can't right now, just click on the Print This Page icon
at the top, scoop the pages from your printer and take it to bed
with you:-) and enjoy this issue of ARISE!
As always, my
greatest wishes for your complete success,

ARISE ARTICLE
Got
Freedom?
People want happiness. I know that’s a "duh"
statement, but bear with me a moment.
If we agree that everyone wants to be happy, why aren't we all just staring at
each other with goofy grins on our faces all the time? Why do relatively few
people orient their lives around happiness? And where do we need to focus our
energy in order to be truly happy?
When I ask folks what would really make them happy, many heartily respond, "to
be more successful." When I ask them what success means, having not thought
about it much before, they usually tell me that they want more money. So is
money a key that unlocks the gates of happiness? I mean, many folks (especially
here in the States) are willing to completely orient their lives around money,
right? They are willing to work long hours, often in professions that bring them
little joy, in the pursuit of more money.
In the past, I’ve been quite efficient at coaching people around making more
money. I was under the assumption (mostly because I thought more money would
make ME happier) that I was doing meaningful work that would significantly
improve the quality of these individuals’ lives. Looking back, did reaching that
particular goal really make that person happier? Over time, I'd have to admit
that the answer seems to be "No, not really."
Just to back up that point, psychologist David Myers reports that in America
real income has doubled since 1960. In the U.S. today we’re twice as likely to
own cars, air conditioners, and clothes dryers. We’re twice as likely to go out
for dinner on any given evening. Yet our divorce rate has doubled, teen suicide
has tripled, and cases of depression have increased tenfold.
Studies show that if you visit a lottery winner just six months after their
windfall, they tend to return to their same level of happiness before they
cashed their ticket. Thus, wealth appears to be an ephemeral factor in one’s
level of happiness.
Surprisingly, research also shows that health, good looks, and status all have
little to do with the levels of happiness we experience. And yet, along with
making more money, those are the places where so many of us focus much of our
time and energy. So the question remains: "Then what factors really contribute
to happiness?"
Having spoken with thousands of people, my thought is that the thread woven
throughout happy peoples' lives is a strong sense of freedom.
We all really want to feel free, don't we? We want to be able to work in
vocations that bring us joy. We want to be able to choose where we spend our
time and energy. We want to be free of financial concerns, free from health
problems, free to be who we really are in our relationships, free from anything
that interferes with our sense of peace.
The desire for freedom appears to be an incredibly motivating force. Throughout
our history on Earth, men and women have given their lives in the name of living
freely. America was born out of the desire for more freedom. Likewise, the
political unrest we see all around the world today stems from peoples' desire to
nurture and protect their freedom.
On a personal level, the more unrestricted I feel, the happier I tend to be. For
example, I feel most successful when it’s a Wednesday and I’m the only one on
the lake or the ski slope. For me, that’s freedom. That’s bliss. In those
moments, I've won the game.
So I’m thinking that feeling free is a large root feeding the Tree of Happiness.
And while I know this is true for me and there seems to be lots of anecdotal
evidence to support this, almost no one I ask ever mentions freedom as the
linchpin to their happiness.
Are we unaware of the impact of freedom on the level of happiness we experience?
Do we all just assume that we’re free and not really think much about whether we
are really living that way? Does the crush of media influence lead us to believe
that things that have come to symbolize freedom (like a shiny new credit card)
will make us feel better than simple freedom? All of the above?
My thoughts for a happy life? Pursue freedom. Create freedom. Demand freedom.
Allow freedom. Identify (write it down!) and orient your life around that which
makes you feel free...
And lasting happiness is sure to follow.

NOT ENOUGH TO MAKE
A LIVING
By Steve Goodier
"I don't subscribe to the thesis, 'Let the buyer beware,'" said
the American writer Isaac Asimov. "I prefer the disregarded one that
goes, 'Let the seller be honest.'"
A century ago, clothier John Wanamaker, whose retail business grew
into one of the first department stores, would have agreed. He
instilled the attitude of utmost honesty in his employees. The story
is told of one of his advertising people who was instructed to make
a
sign advertising neckties that were reduced in price from one dollar
apiece to 25 cents. After personally examining the ties, the adman
asked the buyer, "Are they any good?"
"No, they're not," replied the buyer with all sincerity.
The advertiser wanted to be completely honest, so he finally wrote
the copy this way: "They are not as good as they look, but they are
good enough at 25 cents." The department sold out of ties almost
immediately and was forced to purchase several more weeks' supply of
cheap ties to fill the persistent demand (Selling Solutions, Juanita
Ruiz, Ed., Oct. 1995).
Wanamaker's reputation for honesty helped to later catapult him to
the office of U. S. Postmaster General. He believed that only a
business based on values has real value. He built his company and
his life on his values - and both were successful.
It is truer today than ever before. To be successful, it is not
enough to just make a living. We have to make a life. Build your
life on solid values and you will build a life of value.

GIVING
BACK
You might already support these or similar organizations, but it's
the sad truth that we can never really do enough to help people,
especially children. Here is what I support and encourage you to
review:
The
Internet Toy Drive
Founded by Anne Marie Baugh and myself, and sponsored by Drew
Bledsoe (#11, 2001 Super Bowl Champion quarterback), we are official
corporate sponsors of the U.S. Marine's Toys for Tots program.
My
WorldVision Children
This is the special group of children from around the world that I
sponsor. WorldVision is a Christian organization that has been
around for decades and almost every penny donated goes directly to
these needy children and their families. Nothing beats receiving a
handwritten letter, or even an email now, from "your
child":-) You can even buy chickens or cows that get right to
these families in dire need!
St.
Jude Children's Hospital
My father was a lifelong musician and played piano in bands with
Danny Thomas (founder of St. Jude and father of Marlo Thomas) among
others during the depression, thirties and early World War II years.
Understandably, this world famous research hospital is close to my
heart:-)
Parenting
with Dignity P
If you are a parent, expecting to be one in the
future, or even believe you've done your parenting job, do yourself
a great favor and check out this fabulous resource! Drew Bledsoe,
his father and family members, my great friend Tom Heatherington and
many more have established an absolutely wonderful foundation
devoted to the betterment of children and families (Mac Bledsoe was
interviewed on ABC's 20/20 this year).
