Will You ARISE & Help Me?
Dear Valued Subscriber,
Amazing! I've let
another several months slip by between issues. Easter, Mother's Day,
Father's Day, Canada Day and the 4th of July are all but history. We
are now deep into glorious summer and my post-winter pale appearance has
given way to the deepening tan that my French blood allows.
This year, I am outdoors as much as possible. I take a long walk
each morning, don my rollerblades a couple of afternoons a week
(both along the beautiful sculpture park right out front of my
building), and have even enjoyed time boating and attending race
events. I LOVE this time of year!
Even though I've been
at play a little these past few months, I've also been hard at work
as you will soon read:-)
Remember my print
book, "A
Large Slice of Life to Go, Please!"? Believe it or not, I
have not had the chance to start to promote it properly yet, mostly
because of what you will soon hear about. It has though, to my
utmost delight and total surprise, won the
NABE Book of
the Year Award that now adorns my office wall.
Early this year, I met a teacher through
the Slice website who I
felt would be the perfect partner for a book that I've wanted to
produce for a decade now. It's a book of true stories, empowering
stories, written by
teenagers, whose sole purpose is to help their fellow teens with the
many issues they face in today's confusing, complicated and often
unkind world.
This
was one of those "Get serious Rick, how can you even think
about taking on
another project right now, but, how can I NOT?" kind of projects,
and Linda Aspen-Baxter immediately migrated to the concept of "The
Ultimate Teenager's Survival Guide" (not the real title/can't
give that away in this Internet world) in
a big way. We have now set the template to collect the stories
from teens all over the world during the next several months.
If
you know of a school, or a teacher (a project for the upcoming
school year), or a community group/leader that is centered
around teenagers, I strongly encourage you to visit our site, and immediately contact those persons to
help spread the word. Send
those people here. Thank you!
Do you receive jokes
and funny pictures and warm 'n fuzzy pieces from all yur rowdy
Internet friends? I sure do and every once in a while I receive
something worth sharing with you. This page will take a while to
load but I think you'll feel it's worth waiting for some
GQQD ADVICE.
I've put together some
great material for you in this issue including the opportunity to
experience my latest product. Actually, it's not just mine, but
a collaboration of 3 great friends. Rick Saruna, the 'miracle
worker' in getting me to quit
smoking easily, and my former music partner of 20 years,
Larry Thompson, are my co-conspirators:-).
After my experience of being able to quit smoking
for life and working with Rick and Larry putting
our
digital quit smoking program together,
I became acutely aware of exactly how Rick was impacting the lives of
so many people in his clinic. So, we began discussions on how we
could best improve peoples lives in general.
Make
Every Day A Great Day is the
result. I will let the presentation, and the stunning testimonials,
speak for themselves. You are encouraged to join the affiliate
program of both products (you will find the Affiliate link at the
bottom of each page).
Before I leave, I want
to direct your attention to what I feel is a noble effort to support
an organization that I have supported almost since the first day I
logged on the Internet.
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is especially close to my
heart for 2 reasons. First, my youngest daughter was a special
needs (aren't ALL children 'special needs'?) child and was helped in HUGE ways by organizations such as
this, and second, my father played piano behind St. Jude founder
Danny Thomas way back in time. So, please
click
here and see the heartwarming story and good work this family is
doing.

BACKYARD TENTS AND
CARDBOARD HOUSES
Many a parent has been surprised, when giving a fancy gift to a
child, to discover the big box in which it came holds more allure
for the child than the gift itself. Kids have a great
passion for forts, playhouses, clubhouses, little nooks and crannies
indoors and out, tents anywhere and everywhere, treehouses.
Children are often very inventive in creating these special spaces
for themselves -- stretching a blanket from one piece of furniture
to another to serve as a roof, putting a sheet over a cardtable to
transform it into a clubhouse, cutting windows and a door into a
large cardboard box to build a playhouse. The list can go on and on.
How did you create your kid space when you were young?
Lots of us still have a great enthusiasm for treehouses, and forts,
and tents in our backyard. While I was on a trip recently, the bed
where I slept was under a skylight that afforded me a view of a very
tall oak tree. I looked up and designed in my mind the best
treehouse ever.
Everyday, in my imagination, I would climb the tree and sit in my
treehouse. When we left, I was sad to leave my treehouse up in those
oak branches. So I relocated it and take it with me every place I
go. It is now the treehouse of my heart.
YOU’VE ALWAYS HAD THE BLUEPRINT
Build the treehouse of your heart. From its heights, you can look
down and get a new perspective on problems. The lofty limbs of your
heart hold you safely in your arboreal shelter, and that security is
always there whenever you choose to enter. Judgment Jabber does not
have the secret password so cannot intrude.
Your treasures and talents are stashed there and you can always find
them easily. You laugh in this place and invent new ways to play.
Ah, the gratitude that soaks through you in your treehouse. You only
allow in playmates like joy and generosity and good cheer. On the
outside of your treehouse is a big sign that says, “No grumps, or
grouches, or grudges allowed,” and that rule is magically enforced.
Up there you perform exquisitely -- perhaps you sing sweet melodies,
give dazzling speeches, act in starring roles, speak in lyrical
rhyme, bake astonishing cakes, whistle all your favorite songs
on-key. Each time you enter, the weather turns perfect, even on
summer dog days. And you have a whole cache of mighty magic wands in
your treehouse that make all your dreams come true.
GLOW FOR IT
When you are in the treehouse of your heart, no one knows you are
there. Yet everyone sees your treehouse kind of smile and suspects
you have a marvelous secret. Once you begin making trips to your
treehouse, your secret will make you glow.
Soon you will be in a treehouse state of mind whether you are up
there, or on the ground of day-to-day life. Part of you will
always dwell serenely in the treehouse of your heart. The
heights you will reach will be astounding. The treetops will be your
home.
AND TODAY . . .
Begin to build your treehouse today. Rest comfortably (under a tree
would be good) and imagine your treehouse. Of what is it
constructed? Pine, maple, bricks of gold? If you have windows in it,
what are the views? Oceans, forests, your kingdom?
Will you furnish it? With what? Mahogany, rattan, shapeshifting
pieces? Of what is the floor made? Carpet, tile, sunbeams? What
objects will you place up there? Dishes, candles, a Genie’s lantern?
In your treehouse, you might have incense of all your favorite
smells to permeate your new space.
VERY important: choose the emotions you want to imbue your
treehouse. Feel them and let them fill the place you are building
just as incense fills a room with fragrance.
Take lots of time to create your treehouse. Know you can create and
re-create and then create some more. Construction can be ongoing or
it can be done for now; it is up to you
Today hang out in the treehouse of your heart. Enjoy the towering
freedom. Today will be the first of many when you abide for a while
in your treehouse. It will become a place you visit more and more
frequently. It will grow more vivid for you with each new day. This
nook in your heart will enrich your life and your soul.
Hear the loud peals and quiet chimes of your freedom and
independence. Celebrate. Raise the roof of your treehouse with
merriment and thankfulness.

WEEEEEE!
The man dated the first daughter.
The next day the farmer asked for the man's opinion. Well" said the
man, " She's just a weeeeee bit, not that you can hardly notice...
pigeon-toed."
The farmer nodded and suggested the man date one of the other girls;
so the man went out with the second daughter.
The next day, the farmer again asked how things went.
Well," the man replied, "She's just a weeeee bit, not that you can
hardly tell... cross-eyed."
The farmer nodded and suggested he date the third girl to see if
things might be better. So he did.
The next morning the man rushed in exclaiming, "She's perfect, just
perfect. She's the one I want to marry." So they were wed right
away.
Months later the baby was born.
When the man visited the nursery he was horrified: the baby was the
ugliest, most pathetic human you can imagine.
He rushed to his father in-law asking how such a thing could happen
considering the beauty of the parents.
"Well," explained the farmer, "She was just a weeeee bit, not that
you could hardly tell... pregnant when you met her."
Imagine waking up every day knowing that
you are going to experience a day filled with joy,
excitement, exhilaration and fulfillment!
Imagine going
to bed every night feeling completely at peace
with yourself, reliving the wonderful results of your
day only to wake up totally
refreshed to do it all over again!
The above can be your reality, each
and every day.

WHEN YOU JUDGE
YOURSELF
by Steve Goodier
Charles Allen, in his book Victories in the Valleys of Life (Fleming
H. Revell, 1981), tells the story of a man who, one wintry day, went
to traffic court in Wichita, Kansas, not knowing court had been
canceled because of a blizzard. A few days later he wrote this
letter:
"I was scheduled to be in court February 23rd, at 12:15 p.m.,
concerning a traffic ticket. Well, I was there as scheduled and, to
my surprise, I was the only one there. No one had called to tell me
that the court would be closed, so I decided to go ahead with the
hearing as scheduled, which meant that I had to be the accuser, the
accused and the judge. The citation was for going 46 miles per hour
in a 35-mile-per-hour zone. I had the speed alert on in my car, set
for 44 miles per hour; and as the accuser, I felt that I was going
over 35 miles per hour, but as the accused, I know that I was not
going 46 miles per hour. As judge, and being the understanding man
that I am, I decided to throw it out of court this time. But it had
better not happen again."
He had a rare opportunity to judge himself and took full advantage.
On the other hand, we probably judge ourselves all day long. We may
even react more harshly to our own mistakes and errors than we would
ever react to those same shortcomings in others.
Two thousand years ago a Roman writer named Publilius Syrus
observed, "How unhappy are they who cannot forgive themselves."
Whether dealing with others or with ourselves, it usually helps to
err on the side of grace. Do you need to be gentler with yourself?

GIVING
BACK
You might already support these or similar organizations, but it's
the sad truth that we can never really do enough to help people,
especially children. Here is what I support and encourage you to
review:
The
Internet Toy Drive
Founded by Anne Marie Baugh and myself, and sponsored by Drew
Bledsoe (#11, 2001 Super Bowl Champion quarterback), we are official
corporate sponsors of the U.S. Marine's Toys for Tots program.
My
WorldVision Children
This is the special group of children from around the world that I
sponsor. WorldVision is a Christian organization that has been
around for decades and almost every penny donated goes directly to
these needy children and their families. Nothing beats receiving a
handwritten letter, or even an email now, from "your
child":-) You can even buy chickens or cows that get right to
these families in dire need!
St.
Jude Children's Hospital
My father was a lifelong musician and played piano in bands with
Danny Thomas (founder of St. Jude and father of Marlo Thomas) among
others during the depression, thirties and early World War II years.
Understandably, this world famous research hospital is close to my
heart:-)
Parenting
with Dignity P
If you are a parent, expecting to be one in the
future, or even believe you've done your parenting job, do yourself
a great favor and check out this fabulous resource! Drew Bledsoe,
his father and family members, my great friend Tom Heatherington and
many more have established an absolutely wonderful foundation
devoted to the betterment of children and families (Mac Bledsoe was
interviewed on ABC's 20/20 this year).
