Will You ARISE & Help Me?
Dear Valued Subscriber,
The "lucky 13" issue
comes during, well, just after Halloween. Did someone say spooky? Speaking
of 'witch':-), I had an absolute blast taking my 2 'Spidermen' grandboys
out trick 'r treatin Friday nite, both
dressed up as the big screen hero just cuz they
simply had to have the same costume. So many genuinely gracious
people along the way who simply love children gleefully giving out
candy after spending hours decorating their homes with cobwebs,
goblins, lights, pumpkins and even featuring some custom-crafted
horror creations of their own! And NO, I didn't take a single treat
from my boys' overfilled bags back home, and after reading the below,
you can probably see why at this particular time I wouldn't even
think the thot ...
Allow me to brag
justa lil' bit because, well - I quit smoking! No
biggie? Well, consider this for just a second: I have smoked since the
ripe old age of 9. Yup, darn near 40 years. Just after my wife became pregnant with
our firstborn,
Sara, I quit for a coupla years. Went back to it (did someone say stress from operating both a drycleaning and a songwriting business?) but quit again in the
late 80's. Divorce stress I guess was as good as any other reason to
start up yet again last decade.
Both times I quit, I went through utter hell, experiencing severe withdrawals,
cravings, anxiety and I was just plain too miserable to be around day in
and day out, week after week for too many months
on end. The last time I bought boxes of Caramilk bars as
"rewards" at the end of the day for my heroic efforts.
Dare I say not a good choice?
This time though, I
decided quitting was going to be different - a lot different. I wanted to quit as painlessly
as possible, put no one in the path of any wrath from me, and more
importantly, STOP for the rest of my life. I enlisted the help of a
friend, a NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) doctor who also practices
hypnotism, relaxation therapy, laser therapy, and has a
very successful practice helping those with weight-loss and quit
smoking aspirations as well as those wanting relief from depression, anxiety etc. He even has
a fitness gym, which I have yet to partake of in spite of his
urgings:-)
Rick kept me for 3
hours. He reinforced, in relaxation therapy, my
reasons for wanting to quit (we discussed these in advance) ie: what I was
'trading up' for. Did someone say I want to be around to wrestle
with my grandsons for
at least another 30 years and take them out for another decade of Halloweens? Or, that I was tired of
hardly being able to catch my breath after rollerblading just a few
hundred yards on the riverpath in front of my highrise. What
about having to trot
outside no matter where you are these days to 'light up' as if an outcast, and
then, "stinking" like an ashtray to everyone
within yards who does not smoke? My caring friend also
explained the REAL nature of cigarette addiction (and it has little to do with nicotine)
and how food plays a huge role to help tame the beast of addiction.
Rick then gave me
a laser treatment.
It's exactly 3 weeks since D-Day
(Done Day) and I have NOT had a cigarette in my hand let alone
between my lips. Thoughts of going out to get a pack have
occasionally crept into my mind, but nothing, and I mean nothing has
even come close to the 'climbing the wall' cravings I had to fight off so many
times in the past. The power of the human mind at work and the rest
(including my smoking), as they say, is history.
Code Amber (you can
see their missing children tickers on most of my
sites) is sponsoring a great event called Code Amber
Community Challenge - 1 Day - 100,000 Children where they aim to
give away 100,000 free DNA Kits on one day, December 13th, 2003. If
you're a parent or grandparent or know some families you'd like to
help protect, click

Well-known
"spirit coach" Terri Levine, who interviewed me in a teleconference
for personal and
business coaches earlier this year, has written a wonderful book
entitled "Stop Managing, Start Coaching”. She
will let you rake in $1,906.00 in free bonuses (including a
big one from me) TODAY, November 4, if you help
her book become a #1 bestseller at Amazon tomorrow. Click
here for the exciting details. You might want to
check out the book first at
Amazon. I apologize for not
letting you know sooner:-)
Writing
is an enjoyable process for most people. Who didn't take a stab at
writing poetry at least once during their life? Writing can also be a
great "people building" tool and the craft of journaling
is thoroughly explored in an excellent article entitled Journaling
for Fun and Impact by Sandy Karn. Enjoy!
Now, please kick back
(and if you can't right now, just click on the Print This Page icon
at the top, scoop the pages from your printer and take it to bed
with you:-) and enjoy this issue of ARISE!
As always, my
greatest wishes for your complete success,

Rick Beneteau

Journaling for Fun and Impact
by Sandy Karn
Journaling is a powerful process to increase your self-understanding and your personal effectiveness. It is a
significant process that helps you in building "your" life and business. Many people who begin keeping a journal are amazed
at the results and express regret that they didn't start many years earlier. In a sense, a journal is simply an expanded
version of the diary, a concept that has been around for quite some time.
Start by getting an attractive hardcover journal. Keep it at your fingertips whenever possible so you will be able to write down
insights whenever they come to mind and have all of your important information in one place. In this age of technology,
some people elect to use some type of electronic journal. There is considerable evidence to suggest that the handwritten
journal is the most effective by far. Apparently the very process of writing stimulates our mind and then we become
aware of more significant insights to include in the journal. If you have difficulty writing in long hand-or have to struggle to
read what you have written-a computerized journal may be better for you, as long as you manually enter the data in your
computer. Resort to a dictated journal only if you are unable -or
unwilling-to write or enter data manually into your computer. The bottom line is that a bound handwritten journal
will produce the best results-if you really use it; however an electronic journal is better than nothing.
Use the journal to capture thoughts, ideas, quotes, concerns, wants,
needs-EVRYTHING! Continually ask yourself "What do I want?" Listen for the message from your heart. Don't
settle for the first thing that comes to mind. The more you understand yourself, the less effort it will take to accomplish
those things that you really want. You will be more likely to
create a life that supports what you want, rather than what everybody thinks you should have. Be sure to write answers to
this question in your journal on a regular basis.
Use the following thought starters on a regular basis toenhance the results from your Journaling:
I felt inspired/energized today when...
I didn't like...
I helped...
I struggled with...
I learned...
Soon, you will start to realize how very revealing these statements can be. You will begin to see many insights about
yourself, your wants, and the true desires of your heart. Patterns of thought and behavior will be revealed. It is
important to review your journal on a regular basis-once a month is most common-to glean the insights you have
accumulated. Look for patterns and themes. Ask what you can learn from that month's journal entries. Use your new insights
to formulate new goals and objectives or to revise existing ones. Use your journal to learn about yourself and to redirect
your goals and plans accordingly. Enjoy the journey!
Your goal:
To realize the power of journaling to enhance your life and increase your effectiveness.
The result:
You will gain many new insights into yourself, your thought patterns, your feelings and emotions, and your wants and
desires. You will become much more in tune with your
authentic self and less likely to blindly conform to the wishes and expectations of others unquestioningly accept the status
quo.
Your assignment:
Start your own personal journal and record your entries daily. Pick a set day each month, such as the fourth Saturday, to
review your journal entries, looking for new insights, patterns and themes. Write at least one new (or substantially revised)
goal or objective based on that month's journaling experiences.
Wishing You the Very Best!

A MONSTER TO HUG
by Steve Goodier
One couple spent a holiday driving in the mountains. "Every time you
race around one of those narrow curves," exclaimed the wife, "I just
get terrified."
"Then do what I do," suggested her husband. "Close your eyes!" We are all afraid at times, but closing our eyes is not always a
helpful way through fear. Better to open your eyes and face those fears head-on.
In 1972 David Miln Smith had such an opportunity. Smith, an adventurer, author and professional speaker, decided to spend a night
alone in St. Michael's Cave on the island of Gibraltar as a test of courage. In his book Hug the Monster (Kansas City: Andrews and
McMeel, 1996), he tells of hearing strange sounds all around him as he lay
there in the pitch-black, damp, deserted cave. Most frightening was the fact that he came to believe he was not alone!
Fear became panic and he was afraid he was losing his mind. Then suddenly, as he was approaching his psychological breaking point,
Smith thought to himself, "Whatever the monster looks like, I will hug
it." That simple, almost silly thought brought great relief to his restless mind. He soon fell into a deep and peaceful sleep until
morning. He learned that embracing his fear, literally or figuratively, allowed him to subdue it.
We each have our nights of fear. We each encounter monsters of some sort. We may fear spiders or insects, heights or crowds, abandonment
or loneliness, the future or death. And most of us are occasionally visited by shadows of these monsters in the dark of night.
The next time you're afraid, try "hugging the monster." Face that fear
head-on, whatever it is, and embrace it. You may be surprised at how
quickly it slips away and at how confident you begin to feel. Like that beautiful spirit Eleanor Roosevelt said, "You gain strength,
courage, and confidence by every experience in which you stop to look
fear in the face."
Do you have a monster to hug?

GIVING BACK
You might already support these or similar organizations, but it's the sad truth that we can never really do enough to help
people, especially children. Here is what I support and encourage you to review:
The Internet Toy Drive
Founded by Anne Marie Baugh and myself, and sponsored by Drew Bledsoe (#11, 2001 Super Bowl Champion quarterback), we are
official corporate sponsors of the U.S. Marine's Toys for Tots
program.
My WorldVision Children
This is the special group of children from around the world that I sponsor. WorldVision is a Christian organization that has been
around for decades and almost every penny donated goes directly to these needy children and their families. Nothing beats
receiving a handwritten letter, or even an email now, from "your child":-) You can even buy chickens or cows that get right to
these families in dire need!
St. Jude Children's Hospital
My father was a lifelong musician and played piano in bands with Danny Thomas (founder of St. Jude and father of Marlo Thomas)
among others during the depression, thirties and early World War II years. Understandably, this world famous research hospital is
close to my heart:-)
Parenting with Dignity
P
If you are a parent, expecting to be one in the future, or even believe you've done your parenting job, do yourself a great favor
and check out this fabulous resource! Drew Bledsoe, his father and family members, my great friend Tom Heatherington and many
more have established an absolutely wonderful foundation devoted to the betterment of children and families (Mac Bledsoe was
interviewed on ABC's 20/20 this year).
